As America reopens after the prolonged COVID-19 crisis, it’s critical that working families be protected on the job, in stores, and everywhere people congregate. That’s why the New Jersey State AFL-CIO is joining with the National AFL-CIO on June 3 in a Day of Action aimed at getting the HEROES Act (HR-6800) introduced and passed in the U.S. Senate and signed by President Trump.
The HEROES Act was passed by the House of Representatives May 15. It embraces America’s Five Economic Essentials.
The Day of Action likewise centers on America’s Five Economic Essentials:
Keep front-line workers safe and secure.
Keep workers employed and protect earned pension checks.
Keep state and local governments, our public schools and the U.S. Postal Service solvent and working.
Keep America healthy – protect and expand health insurance for all workers.
Keep America competitive – hire people to build infrastructure.
On June 3, the New Jersey State AFL-CIO and our Union Veterans Council will be partnering with the Bergen CLC to bring meals and snacks to the nearly 600 residents and staff of the New Jersey Veterans Home at Paramus, to serve our brothers and sisters who served all of America in the armed forces, and to care for front-line union sisters and brothers who care for them. Their health and economic security have both suffered because of the coronavirus.
The state-run veterans homes are examples of why all five essentials are needed: The homes involve health care, personal protection for caregivers, fair wages and job security for staff, pensions for the heroes who live there, and infrastructure work in maintaining the facilities.
While the pandemic crisis strains our economy and puts hard-working people in harm’s way, we will continue to advocate for pro-labor legislation at the state and federal levels.
And the New Jersey State AFL-CIO will stand with all brothers and sisters in our affiliated unions as they rise up in their own ways on the Day of Action. Every union in the Garden State is invited to unleash its creative capacity to make our voices heard in this extraordinary time.
